Clinton is still riding the Video Game Violence bandwagon

GamePolitics.com has an article about Common Sense Media's Survey of the 2008 presidential candidates on where they stand regarding issues such as video game violence. Clinton was quoted as saying...

Research has shown that violent and sexually explicit media contribute to aggressive behavior, early sexual experimentation, obesity, and depression.

Whenever I meet young parents... they tell me that they are worried about losing control over the raising of their own children and about ceding the responsibility of implicating values and behaviors to a multi-dimensional media marketplace over which they have no control...

I wonder when research will be done to see just how many of those parents are actually taking an active role in their children's development. I realize that older children are harder to moderate, but it is certainly not impossible. The only thing my wife and I let our son watch/play is shows/games from Noggin. I have personally watched at least a couple of episodes of every show that airs on Noggin, and approve of them.

Don't get me wrong here. I do approve of any legislation that would keep such games out of the hands of young children. I am just afraid that such games will eventually be legislated out of existence by the likes of Clinton.  It is not the government's job to parent our children. It is ours.

Nicely put. I myself don’t think that retailers should allow children to buy games that are rated above their age level without a parent there to ok it, but most places already have that rule. Legislation is unnecessary in my opinion.

Either way, they all make it sound like us poor young parents (I’m 22 and my wife is 20, and our daughter is 1) just got here from the medieval age and are incapable of understanding the world around us, so we need legislature from the federal government to make sure we can raise our kids.

I’m going to raise my child with caring and effort. As a young parent, I have a feeling I probably have a better understanding of the new culture that technology has brought about than Hillary Clinton probably does. I think things like this stem from a lack of understanding about video games from politicians….

….I think it all boils down to this: We need Congress to join a massive LAN party and learn the joy of the word “frag”. ^.^

Jeremy, thanks for your comments. I too believe that the younger generation of parents are probably more capable of dealing with today’s world. The older kids (eg Hillary) are consumed with ignorance and fear.

Thank you again, Jeremy. I hope your Christmas was a merry one, and good luck with parenthood.
